Ben’s (KL Pavillon)

Spaghetti / Crispy Duck Confit & Sundried Tomatoes

Salad / Burnt Butter Wild Mushrooms with Roquefort Cheese, Caramelized Walnuts & Truffle Oil

Some weeks ago, we made a little trip to Kuala Lumpur with the pals. On our last night, we stumbled upon Ben’s. The menu was refreshing & exciting, the decor subtly elegant and the food turned out pretty tasty- the spaghetti was done perfectly al dente, and the desserts were happily not-too-sweet. The salad was warm and inviting and comforting, crisp leaves and warm melty mushrooms.

This coming from someone who’s neither a sweet tooth nor a salad fan. And we simple couldn’t believe the prices: main-courses we chose were priced around SGD10plus. We each had a main course and a drink, and we all shared a starter, a salad and 3 desserts. The final bill came up to an average of SGD15 per person, tax and service charge included.

The restaurant also thoughtfully provided free wi-fi and little “table topic” cards with questions like “What’s the most embarrassing trend you’ve ever followed” or “If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be”. We lingered for the longest time, basking in the good food and happy company. It’s the kind of place we would “haunt”, if only it were in Singapore. Inexpensive, delicious, adventurous but most importantly, unpretentious x

agnès b. LE PAIN GRILLÉ

Posted in 2012, cafe, Food, Photography, Travel by Kimberly Kristen Wong on January 11, 2012

While I’d like to say that fashion cafes are usually just a very clever PR gimmick, I have to admit that the cakes at agnès b. LE PAIN GRILLÉ are genuinely lovely –  light & just the right amount of sweet!

On another note, we’re flying to KL tomorrow for a short getaway with the pals! Have a good weekend, everyone xx

THE MAIDEN VOYAGE 2012

Posted in 2012, Daren, Family, Food, Photography, Travel by Kimberly Kristen Wong on January 11, 2012

Hong Kong – the maiden voyage of the new year & the fifth time we’re there in less than 12 months. We spent the first week of 2012 in the Asian shopping mecca filling up on old school trolley-cart dim-sum & street side delicacies. Fell miserably ill- but even that was fun, holed up in our delightful hotel suite watching pay-per-view on surround sound, digesting documentaries on snow leopards, fighting to keep our eyes open and then falling asleep with you. It would be quite nice to improve on my half-arsed Cantonese.

It’s good to be home, and I’m spending my next few days curled up in a ball under the sheets, with a myriad of teas and some crisp new books. It’s just what the doctor ordered x

FIRE UP THE OVENS

Posted in 2011, Family, Festive, Food, Home, Photography, singapore by Kimberly Kristen Wong on December 30, 2011

Run, run, run / As fast as you can / You can’t catch me / I’m the Gingerbread Man!

This Christmas, on top of the usual ham-turkey-roastbeef-lambstew meat fest, we decided to fire up the ovens and bake up a Christmas storm. An afternoon knee deep in flour, sugar and cinnamon resulted in some Italian Tiramisu, English Trifle Pudding, Shrek-inspired Gingerbread Men & Rocky Road filled with M&Ms, brazilian nuts, biscotti & marshmallows! Yum : )

TATSUYA

Posted in 2011, Daren, Events, Food, Photography, singapore by Kimberly Kristen Wong on November 24, 2011

Tatsuya to celebrate with the boy. We wanted to eat everything on the menu, so we went for 1 x chef omakase and then more à la carte than we could finish.

In these last week+ leading up to the trunk show, finding the time to blog is a rare luxury! I’m so tired with these 9amto4pm days, let’s just let the melt-in-your-mouth-sashimi & mouth-watering pictures do the talking, shall we?

& melon that, literally, bursts in your mouth. ’twas a good meal indeed x

db Bistro Moderne

Posted in 2011, Food, Friends, singapore by Kimberly Kristen Wong on November 11, 2011

Back again with more food pictures. This time from lunch with Junny at db Bistro Moderne. We stuffed ourselves with foie gras and artichokes and gnocchi and seafood casseroles. And then when we thought we couldn’t eat anymore, we treated ourselves to some panna-cotta-tasting-crème-brûlée and quite possibly the best dark chocolate soufflé we’ve ever had. We really must meet more often! xx

It would seem it’s physically impossible for me to go two posts without updating with pictures of food. Or for me to lose any weight, but that’s a different story altogether, I suppose.

This weekend, we caught The National live at the Esplanade, and can I just say, when Matt Berninger dived into the sea of people, the crowd hit fever pitch, and I could have just died happy in my seat. And that last song, acapella? BLEW. MY. MIND.

IL-LIDO ITALIAN DINING

Posted in 2011, Food, Lifestyle, Photography, singapore by Kimberly Kristen Wong on October 23, 2011

Apart from the braised beef cheeks & molten lava chocolate cake, our dining experience at Il-Lido simply could not compare to the last time we were here. The menu itself was rather interesting, but the scallops (with a blueberry dressing) were under-seasoned and the seabass, mediocre at best. On the bright side, we just couldn’t get enough of the perfectly baked lava cake – I just kept digging in, it was rich, and addictive.
